keyboard doesn't respond when opening an excel book

Hi all,

When I double click on an excel file to open it, I cannot use the keyboard.
Nothing works. But if I use the mouse to double click on a cell, I can then
type in it.

If I close the workbook and then File->Open the same workbook or any
workbook the keyboard responds correctly.

Any ideas?
