Keyboard - Shift underscore creates only a blank space

When using the Shift Underscore key, it leaves a blank space on my word
document. What happened to the functionality and how do I change it back?
The normal.dot page was changed a few days ago but we didn't change this key
knowingly.

Please advise asap. (When I copy an email address from Outlook that uses
the underscore key, and paste it into a word document, it leaves the space
blank so it's something to do with the format and not simply the key).

Thanks,
Alex

The first thing I'd check is to see if it's indeed a problem with Normal.dot
having been changed. Choose Tools - Options - File Locations, and note the
location of User Templates. Then, close Word and navigate to that location
using Windows Explorer. You might need to tell it to display hidden/system
files. Rename Normal.dot as Normol-old.dot (or something else you can
remember). Then start Word. (Word will create a new normal.dot.)

Is the problem still there? If not and if you don't have any crucial
customizations stored in normal.dot, you can simply delete the old file you
renamed. Otherwise, you can copy [some, but not all] customizations from the
old normal.dot file using the organizer (Tools - Templates and Add-ins -
Organizer), or you can try to deduce what caused the problem.

What happens if you print the document or view it at a different Zoom level?
Often the problem of missing underlines has more to do with the display than
anything else. The line spacing may be too close (that may require a change
in paragraph format or Compatibility Options) or the zoom to small to
display them properly, and if the line containing the underscore is followed
by a paragraph or section break, it may be obscured by that as well.
