Keyboard Shortcuts in Office 2007 BETA

Hi
I am new to beta software and have just started using the new Office 2007. I
cannot create a keyboard shortcut for a style (built-in or otherwise). I can
select a key combination that is currently unassigned to anything else, but
as soon as I click Ok I get the error "Word cannot change function of
specified key". I have tried this in a doc created in Word 2003 and also
tried in a new blank doc in 2007.

is this a feature that is just not available in the beta version or am i
doing something incorrectly?

Hi Laurie,

Glad to see you were able to find where the Keyboard customization link is in the Word 2007 options :)

Is is it a specific shortcut key combination that you're using or any combination that's a problem?

Do you get the same thing if you start Word 2007 in Office safe mode (hold down the ctrl key when starting Word)?

Hi Bob
I do know my way around Word fairly well, this is why I was so sad yesterday
to find that all my keyboard shortcuts had disappeared, then when I went to
recreate, I was blocked from doing so.

I did start Word in Safe Mode and I still get the same error message. I've
tried different key combinations and none of them seem to be accepted. The
simple one that I am trying to do, is ALT+N in order to apply the Normal
style to a paragraph.

I would like to second this issue. None of my original shortcuts are there
and I can't create any. Same error message. I am going to try and
"workaround" it by using autocorrect for now. -Noel

I have the exact same problem. Is this a bug, or is there a setting that must
be changed to enable it?

Here's a workaround I found: go to the File menu, select Word Options, select
Customization, and select Customize Keyboard. Scroll down Categories until
you get to Styles (near the bottom of the list), and then the program allows
you to enter and assign a shortcut key to a style.

There is clearly a bug in the Modify Style input screen.

hey, thanks for that tip. I found another way as well. I recorded a Macro,
assigned a keyboard shortcut and then selected the style I wanted from my
Styles list.
