at the moment I'm just formatting a cell with a right border, and I can use the keyboard to get me to the highlighted button within the border tab of the format window, but then I have to mouse click. I know that if you're selecting an option with a text word next to it there is an underlined letter which will work but there is none here.

Hi Dave,
I had my doubts thinking you meant a cell --
;
maybe one of these depending on situation
-- mouse pad
-- Arrow UP (or other arrow) -- strictly a single cell selection
-- Enter, Arrow Up (or other arrow)
-- F2 (but you are then in Edit mode)
-- F2, Enter, Arrow Up (or other arrow)

What exactly do you want to do (or not to do), other than never have
the keyboard leave your hands, so you don't get bitten by a mouse.

But from your reply, I see you said button not cell.

If the button is highlighted, isn't it selected and you would just hit
enter; otherwise, if you are on a button such as within a dialog
you would hit tab then enter.

Hi
use the TAB key to cycle through the buttons (a little bit difficult to
see which button is selected though) and hit SPACE if the correct
button is highlighted

Frank, thanks thats what I needed

Not all buttons will accept enter as select. This was one of those cases. To answer your question, I've found that my speed with keyboard use only allows me to work 3-4(or more) times as fast as with mouse or mouse/keyboard combo. Check out the other keyboard shortcuts if you're interested

thanks

Thanks Dave,
I've updated my Fill Handle & Mouse Page to
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/fillhand.htm#spacebar

Actually that part about the buttons was one something my father
told me after he started a class. I usually manage the buttons
with Enter. But I use the spacebar a lot in a browser (IE or Mozilla)
or in Outlook Express.
