Keypad error?

When I type a document on my laptop, on tapping some keys
I get numbers instead of letters. e.g. tapping the K key
produces the number 2 and tapping the L key produces the
number 3.(these nmbers are superscripted in blue on the
relevent keys)
I experimented with various keys and found that if I
pressed a key labelled Fn I could resolve the issue, but
if I turn my Laptop off or hibernate it, the problem
reoccurs when I fire it up again.
Can anyone tell me why this happens and what the solution
is?

Many thanks

Read the manual for your laptop. Why ask this in a Word Newsgroup?

On some laptops a numerical keypad {what is on the right side of a standard
keyboard} can be mapped to the letter keys. Your manual or OEM support
should be able to tell you how to prevent this occurring when loading
Windows.

I have read the manual for my laptop but can't find any
relevant details. I posted the message here because I
have always found the people using this discussion group
very knowledgable about many issues, unlike some other
groups I have tried.
I have obviously offended your sensibilities, for which I
apologise.
Thank you for your reply anyway, it was most constructive
and helpful.

Thanks for the advice. I have perused my 'manual' ( a
slim, unhelpful one) but can't find any reference to key
mapping, and the telephone technical support available
costs too much. I guess I will just have to keep
experimenting until I resolve it by chance!

Thanks anyway!

Have you checked in the system BIOS? There is usually a setting for NumLock
on or off on boot up: there may be something for the Function Lock too.

If not, the only other possibility is that there should be a suite of Laptop
Utilities that came with the laptop. There may be a setting in there for the
Function Key default. It isn't generally a Windows setting so you need to
search in something specific for your hardware and not a general Windows
setting.
