Knowledgebase Completeness and Value

Dan Pedersen

I have repeaditly gone to the documentation and knowledge
base with error codes, only to find they are not in the
documentation and knowlegde base.

Most recently, was using help on Front Page 2000 and
received the error:

Installation error, file not Found. A required
installation file SKU011.cab could not be found. Original
installation source required.

As directed, I installed the installation disk in the D
drive.

The required file was not on the disk.

I searched the knowledge base and found that the above
error is not in the knowledge base.

At this point, a known error has stopped me in my tracks
and forced me to pick up the phone again. This is very
frustrating. I am in Thailand this week and long distance
calls are expensive here.

It seems that including all the error codes and
appropriate corrective actions is very rudimentary.

The knowlegde base appears to be aimed at conventiently
addressing omissions to their documents. Alternatively
stated, avioding updating the documents.

Does anybody know:

Q1) What is Microsoft's documentation update policy?

Q2) What is included in the Microsoft Knowledgebase and
what is not?

It frustrates me that I can not find answers in the
original documentation.

Q3) Am I incorrect in expecting the documentation be
updated.

Q4) Am I further incorrect to expect that the knowledge
base include all error codes and corrective actions?

Q5) Why does the on-line help shipped with the product
have such an incomplete search index? It does not use
multiple keywords. I can normally find the answer faster
on Google than in the Microsoft knowlegde base. :)

Only Microsoft can answer your questions regarding the KB, product documentation and help system.

It seems that you have install one or more Office 2003 applications, which has impacted the
functionality of FP2000. Have run a repair option?

The SKU011.cab is a Office 2003 file.

When I searched the MS KB for SKU011.cab the following KB came up:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;826511
