Laptop Screen Alignment is Off When Hooking Up Projector

Sometimes when hooking up a laptop the screen shifts and vibrates over to the
left a bit, about an inch. Anyone know what causes this and how it could be
resolved?

It looks fine on the projector screen, so only the laptop screen is affected.
