Laptops outside of our domain....

Our company is using consultants to lead a project. They come with
their own laptops and Project 2002 is loaded on their laptop. We use
Windows authentication. We have found that the laptops are not able to
log on to Project Server because they do not have access to our domain.
Our technology support team handles system security, servers, domains,
etc... I am the Project 2002 Administrator but I do not have knowledge
and training with networks, domains, etc.... Can anyone tell me if
there is a way for the consultants to log on outside of our domain and
how this can be set up? Or does anyone out there have suggestions?
Thanks .....

In my own experience, with 2002, you can switch to mixed authentication
and give the consultants Project Server authenication. That worked in
most cases, when they contected from within the domain, but it didn't
work when they tried to remote in. Remote Desktop might work also.

The most effective method was to give the consultants a company desktop
computer with which to do their Project Server work.

Sorry I can't be more help, but I know that I, my server team and my
security team worked many hours trying to find a solution that worked
and we could never get their laptops to authenticate. That also
happened to an employee who, nervous about the various push process and
monitoring systems our network was using, rebuilt his machine at home
over a weekend, using his own software. He couldn't authenticate to
Project Server. I spent about 10 hours on that issue before he admited
what he had done. So I solved it by taking away his PM rights.

They may be able to login to PWA, but if you are sticking to Windows
Authentication, they will not be able to login using MSPP, because
MSPP, when using Windows Authentication, only allows the currently
logged in user on the machine to connect. Consider using Project
Server authentication, or loaning them laptops.

Are you saying that if I change our consultants to have Project Server
authentication instead of Windows Authentication they should be able to
log in?

Yeah, as long as they configure MSPP to work that way, they should be
okay with mixed. Some people have problems getting Mixed to work
properly, but not always. Take a stab at it and let us know!
