Latency period

When running queries in Microsoft Access, the actual append or update seems to take a matter of seconds, even on tables with upwards of 200,000 records. However, this is followed by a much longer period of time where the hourglass pointer contimues to be displayed and the status bar reads "Calculating....".
Does anyone know what Access is actually doing during this period, and more to the point, can I suppress this behaviour in order to get back control. Today an update took over 2 hours, and I had to close Access using task manager. The update seems to have taken place, so what was happening the rest of the time??
