Launching Excel opens multiple workbooks

This is particularly apparent when you double click an
icon to open an existing workbook.

Example:
I have a workbook named "Original Carrier List.xls"
When it is double-clicked it opens fine but initiates two
separate (but connected) workbooks - "Original Carrier
List.xls:1" and "Original Carrier List.xls:2" These show
as active workbooks in the toolbar. I say that they
are "connected" because changing data in one changes data
in the other.

I noticed that this started after a rebuild (win2K prof)
and a reinstallation of Office 2k.

Key point is this: This particular workbook is the only
one with which this happens. Create or open another
workbook and it's fine.

Someone point me in the right direction on this?

thanks

You're only opening one file, with two windows. This happens when you
choose the Window/New Window menu item.

Close all but one of the windows and the ":x" will go away.
