layer objects so text comes through?

I have a grouped objects set; it originally came from the Waves brochure
template.

I've inserted a box into the wave; filled it with color; and now, I'd like
to put a text banner in the box I've created, and send in backward in the
stack of objects but have the text partially appear ..
e.g. to have the words at the front and end of the banner appear but have
the ones in the middle "disappear" behind another stacked object

A couple of thoughts here that MIGHT apply:

Sometimes, if you have lots of layers, it is almost like a puzzle sending
each one to the back so that they end up in the proper order.

This sounds like a case where you would want to be sure to "turn-off" text
wrap on that specific text box!

You might copy the clip or object you want to hide the text. Paste, crop to
the size you need, and place strategically in front of the text (more-or-less
making a text sandwich- with a full slice of bread on the bottom and a cut
piece on top.)

How much you can do with see-through images or objects, or making parts of
certain images/clips transparent depends a lot on which version of Publisher
you have.

(If you see a "Magic Wand" looking icon on your Publisher toolbar -
experiment with it a bit!)

I'm going to try turning off the text box .. could you tell me more about how
which version of Publisher I have affects me? I have Office 2003.

I've tried adjusting the text wrap by selecting "Best Fit" and "Shrink" and
neither helps me achieve the effect I'm looking for, nor did trying all the
options available to me under Order .. my box just disappeared never to be
retrieved.

Any other options? How does my version of Publisher affect this outcome?
And how do I get the magic wand?

Is the group of objects you are using the oval and green wave? All of these objects
can be ungrouped and manipulated separately. You will have to use the arrange menu
for the ungroup, there will be a dialog asking you about the ungroup and the wizard
when you select ungroup. Click yes. It will be the same with the wave segment except
it will say it is an imported image and when you do ungroup it will un-rotate and
turn black. This can be changed. It might be a good idea to copy and paste the group
to have a guide.
