layout of Master document

System: Office XP, Windows XP

I have a master document that consists of several chapters; each chapter is in a separate word file. The layout of chapters is viewed differently in the master file. What is the possible problems? Page setups are the same. The master file uses the same template as individual chapters. Each chapter is in a different section and sarts with a new page. Another problem is Word crashes when I try to save the master file after updating all fields.

I have a lot of figures and tables, each of which has a caption (automatically numbered). Which is the best way to position these objects? Right now, I set all the objects "inline with texts" because it is easier to deal with the captions this way. However, very ofton, the caption and the corresponding object are placed in different pages; or a table is split into two halves; or a figure can not be placed in a page and leaves a half of a page blank

Thank you very much

Thanks, Graham.

My file has more than 200 pages, and many figures. Not sure if Word can handle it correctly. I will try if I could not find another way

I used it for a book with 300+ pages and hundreds of photos (not to mention
hundreds of tables).
