Legal Numbering - starting from a number other than 1

J

Jean Pereira

Using Office XP 2003

I have set up legal automatic numbering using 6 Outline styles and using the
same template for all our documents.

We have a few documents where we want the legal numbering to start from a
number other than 1. Changing the level 1 style to start at a number other
than 1 (in this case 6) and saving it, still results in the number reverting
back to 1 when you open it again.

The only way I could get it to stay at 6 was to start the level 1 style at 6
and add it to the template, but this resulted in every doc using the auto
numbering style to start at 6.

Any ideas?

First, make sure you set your numbering styles up using exactly the steps
outlined in: How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your
Word document
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html.

If you don't do this, you are asking for trouble.
See http://addbalance.com/usersguide/numbering.htm

I just tried it on my system using outline styles set up the way Shauna
Kelly prescribes. When I change the beginning number to start at 6, it does.
When I create a new document, using the same styles, the numbering starts at
1.

Any chance you have set your styles to update the template?

When you change the numbering, are you doing it by:
Modify Style then Modify Numbering (as part of the Style modification
dialog)?

This is as compared to simply Format > Numbering?

Thanks Charles, yes the Update template styles was ticked and as soon as I
took the tick off, changed the number and saved it, the number remained at 6.

The reason the tick was on was that we had to update our styles recently and
because all our docs use the same template, you couldn't see the new styles
and you have to tick that box to be able to see them. We will just have to
remember to untick it in instances where aspects such as numbering are
different.

The option to update styles should be left unticked as a rule and only
ticked for special circumstances, and then changed back to unticked.
