Leveling won't work.

Dave

I have a resource who is free for the week Oct 5th - 12th. I have tasks in
my plan taking 2 days, 2.5 days, 2 days. Allocation units for this resource
is set at 40% so the actual work is less than that. These tasks have one
dependency which is already complete.

When I level resources, these tasks are pushed out to late October/early
November.

Analysing using "View Resource Availability" in PWA shows that this resource
has 1 task for another project on the 17th and 20th Octobver but nothing
else. I.e. 21st-24th Oct and 6-10th Oct free. Why won't project fill in
these days when I level?

This is driving me nuts.

Please please please help somebody! If I can't answer this then leveling is
basically useless becuase it pushes tasks out to later dates even though my
resources are free. I'm sitting staring at my resource whos working time is
basically free for the next 3 weeks but project is scheduling stuff a month
away!

For anyone to begin to help you with this, you'll need to tell us what
leveling settings you're using in Project. We'd need to be able to look at
the project, task and resource calendars as well as other assignments in the
system. Even then, it may be difficult to say without having the actual file
to look at.

Using the built-in leveling capabilities of Microsoft Project 2002 is a
fairly complex subject, and is probably a bit difficult to apply to your
very specific situation without being able to see your project. If you
would reply to me via e-mail, and include your project plan (if possible), I
will try to help you.

Hi Gary/Dale,

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I think leveling issues are something I have
to figure out on my own. I found a solution by clearing all the leveling on
all the projects then leveling by opening all projects, creating a new
window with all the projects in it and then leveling on the "super" project.
This was something I found buried in the Project 2002 Training Courseware
documents.

Thanks!

Well done, my friend! I think you would now agree that leveling is not
intuitive, nor is it easy. I personally recommend that users do all
leveling in the Resource Usage view, and level only one overallocated
resource at a time. The results of leveling for that resource can then be
easily seen in a separate window in which the Leveling Gantt view is
displayed. Any tasks that are not appropriately leveled can have their
leveling cleared in this view for only those specific tasks. I never, ever
level in any task view. Most people level in the Gantt Chart view, which
does not work well on large projects or multiple projects. Hope this helps.
