Levelling

D

Dave

I frequently encounter a problem whereby resources are transferred
between projects so resources may be transferred from another project
manager's projects to one of mine (for example).

If I try to update my plan and level it before they have made the change
to theirs then the levelling doesn't give the correct result because the
other plan still shows the resource as having assignments which conflict
with mine.

So, my question is, is it possible to level a plan whilst taking only a
'local' view of some (or all) of the resources?

Saving the plan to a file isn't feasible because of the way we lock
historic actuals which means it is difficult to overwrite existing plans
on the server.

Many thanks.

Dave,
In the Login dialog, while your are connecting onto the Project Server,
unselect the following option:
Load Summary Resource Assignments.
Hope this helps,

Thank you so much. It does help enormously.

It also provides another example of a straightforward problem which our
highly paid consultants cannot solve. They said this was not possible
and I simply didn't believe them.

Thanks again.

Dave

(Incidentally, the technique I was using previously was to open
conflicting projects, move existing work into the future and then level
mine before closing the conflicting ones without saving them).

Hi Dave,

It sounds like you are using auto-levelling on Enterprise projects. Am
I correct in making that assumption. Despite being sorely tempted, I
have never had the guts to try this. What has your experience been?
How experienced are your PMs? It sure seems like every schedule on the
server would have to be very very solid before even attempting this
exercise!

Thanks for any advice/anecdotes you are willing to share!

No, I was not using auto-levelling and would not even consider using
auto-levelling on a standalone project let alone across the enterprise.

I was levelling on a single project basis and the only way I could see
prior to Gerard's advice was to move conflicting work out of the way by
opening the projects containing it and moving it temporarily into the
future.

Thanks for the feedback, Dave. I didn't think it was possible to auto-
level across the enterprise, but thought I'd check to see if someone
was brave (or something else?) enough to try it.
