line draw - big box?

All I want to do is draw a line in the text of a
document. I get a huge box with "create your drawing here"

What's going on? why cannot I just draw a line as I've
been able to in any other version of Word?

Thanks for your help (since this is not in the help files
or knowledge base)

Tools, Options, General Tab, clear "Automatically create drawing canvas..."
