Lines and Numbers in Footers

I inserted a line within my footer (towards the top of the
footer) and would like to put a page number below the
line. However, Word won't let me place the cursor beneath
the line, just above it. What should I do?

How did you insert the line? If it's a bottom border, then you'll need to
press Enter to get a new paragraph for the page number *and* press Ctrl+Q
(assuming you didn't update the style to include the border) to remove the
border from that paragraph. If you use a top border instead, then the page
number will be below the line with just one paragraph.

I am not familiar with borders - I copied and pasted the
line from another document - I'm not sure how the authors
of that document created the line. I couldn't highlight
the line so I put the mouse arrow over the line until the
4 pointed arrow appeared, did Edit/Copy then Edit/Pasted
it into the footer of the new document. The line goes all
the way across the footer boundary and is about 3/4 of the
way up. When I pressed Enter, I could go below the line
and center the cursor but when I used the insert page
number tool bar to insert a page number, it placed the
page number above the line. I also need to have the page
number in chapter-page format, i.e. 1-1, 1-2, etc. and I
couldn't figure out how to do that. The reason I am
creating new footers and new documents is I am copying and
pasting each chapter in the original document into its own
separate file so it will be easier to do page numbers
within each chapter. I had trouble with section breaks
and page numbers getting screwed up within each chapter in
the original document.

The line is probably a graphic line. You'd be better off using a border.
Delete the line and apply a border to your paragraph. It's much easier to
deal with, and you can position it with regard to text by setting the
"Distance from text" in the Border Options.

For the page numbers, see

Your line should be a border. When you format your
border, click only at the top of the square. Your line
will appear above your text. If you have more than one
row of text in your footer, be sure you highlight both
rows before formatting your border. Otherwise, the line
will appear above each row of text. I hope this helps.
