Hi Barbera,

There were two kb articles describing the steps to set up a link between
Visio and Excel

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;254591
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;323451

If you can't get it to work just drop me a question

Basically you select the data in you worksheet that you need and give that a
name by
Insert/Name/Define
then you go to Visio and start up the database wizard (ttols/add-ons/visio
extras/database wizard
and link shapes to the Excel worksheet

Hi René,

Thanks a lot for this tip. I followed the example and it seemed to work.

Unfortunnatly, as I am really new in Visio, I didn't get to understand the
next step.

I have my Visio file with the master created. I want to insert (i don't know
where!) the shapes of PC's, printers, routers,.... on my draw to create a
network diagram. How are these shapes connected to my Spreadsheet? Do I have
to drag these shapes on the master?..... I am complettely stopped and don't
know how to proceed with my diagram.

Thanks for your help and very sorry for any stupid question... :-(

Hi Barbara,

I presume that what you mean is that when for instance you open the network
diagram in Visio 2003
and from the 'computers and monitors' stencil you drop the shape 'pc' on the
drawing and then if you rightclick on the shape and select 'properties' you
have all the relevant data of the shape
That relevant data should then come from your excel spreadsheet.

After you have linked the shapes on the drawing or the masters on a stencil
with the excel spreadsheet the data will appear in the custom properties
section (to check this either go to window/show shapesheet/custom properties
section or rightclick on the shape and go to shape/custom properties)
The network shapes make use of Runaddon to add an extra menu to the
rightclick menu,
called 'properties'
This can be achieved by the command DOCMD(1312) in the action section.

I hope this is enough to help you on the way, if not let me know.

René
