When creating a new mail folder, I should have the option to set up a
"mirror" file folder. Any messages saved to that message folder should then
be saved in the corresponding file folder, attachments included. That way,
when I search my hard drive for files, it will automatically include mail
items as well as attachments and normal computer files. This will also make
it much easier to manage files in general, as you can (but are not required
to) have the same folder structure in your files as you do in your mail -- I
think most of the time the same folder structure is useful for managing both
types of objects.
This may in turn lead to a whole new kind of mail interface, where the
messages and attachments are simply files in the computer's file system --
not stored in a separate mail file at all. The mail client is simply a
convenient way to find, browse and act upon those mail files. But the mail
client would not be required to view, copy, move or delete those files.
