Link TOC to Page Numbers

Hi all,

Is there a way to insert page numbers and have them automatically be
bookmarks? Basically the user has a 300+ page doc that he wants to link the
TOC (Inserted TOC or manually created TOC, whatever, he was vague) via page
number, so that he can simply edit the page number in the TOC and it will
automatically change the hyperlink. He says he will do the hyperlinks
manually if neccesary, but can't qafford the time to create a bookmark on
every page (this doc will be a template for an on-going project where every
month he will be creating a new 300+ page doc with different info on every
page - incredibly boring copy/paste activity)

Links would be great - this guy is a pretty good self-starter, but neither
he nor I could find much of anything in office help or google.

TIA,
SusanV

This can automatically be done with a correctly inserted TOC.
For details see http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/toc/CreateATOC.html.
So long as the document has been created with the use of styles this will be
easy, if not, the best step forward would be to assign the appropriate
Heading style. This can be done with the use of Find and Replace.
Come back if you need further assistance.
Hope this helps

Hi Dean,

What he wants bookmarked is the page number is the footer, for each page.
Not a paragraph. I apply a style to the page number then create the TOC -
but this does not work, as I cannot highlight the page number and "Add
Text" - that option is greyed out. So I get "No table of contents entries
found."

Ideas?

He's pretty frustrated, and I'm not a heavy Word user, I'm just IT <grin>

Thanks again,

SusanV

This is not the way TOCs work. You use headings (or insert TC fields for the
TOC entries) and generate the TOC based on the headings or TC fields. Each
TOC entry (or at least the page number) is linked to the associated heading
or TC field. You can't bookmark a page number (or anything else in the
header or footer) because the header/footer by definition appears on more
than one page and consequently doesn't have a single page number associated
with it.

Thanks for the response Suzanne - I was afraid of that. Will pass it on to
the user, he'll have to find a work-around of some sort.

Have a Great Day!
