linked GIF files in 2007 vs 2003

I have several presentaions in PP 2003 that contains many linked pictures,
that work fine. In PPT 2007 some of the files are not recognized and display
the little box with the red x that says "The linked image can not be
displayed..."

Has anyone seen this problem before and if so does anyone know of a solution.
