linked table field properties

I hope someone can help - I have several linked tables from excel that have one field that is either a number or a letter. I have tried setting the properties in excel as text or general. When they are opened in access 2003 - they show up as numbers and whenever the data is a letter is shows an error. If I import into access it is fine. Any ideas??
