linking external workbooks

I have a project where I need to link 7 external Excel workbooks into a
"master".

these 7 books have and average of 10 sheets each where I need to copy data
from.

I need to arrange this 70 sheets of data into a regular table so I can do a
custom VLOOKUP.

I did a copy & "paste special" of values only and produced 650 lines of
data. This is quick, but would be hard for the customer to maintain. (The
original data sheets has many look up's from many scattered tables).

I tied a copy & "paste special" - all - linked. This did not copy all data
I wanted and inserted "0" in blank cells.

I tried to insert an object - create from file - linked. This put the
entire work book into picture window overlaying the sheet.

So what is the best way to create a regular table in my "Master.xls" from
the source files?
