linking or embedding avis or mpgs in PPT

I am having inconsistent results when I try to insert a mpg or an avi file
into powerpoint 2003. When I try to link to an object (file) it says it
cannot recognize it.
Yet one of the files is a file from a training module from Microsoft for
adding video to a ppt! What is up?
