linking to Word not working properly

I have problem linking data from an Excel workbook into a Word
document, and have posted my question in the Word newsgroup, but am
hoping someone here might have a solution.

I linked my data by copying the appropriate cells in the workbook to
the Clipboard, and choosing Paste Special-->Paste as Link in Word. The
data initally displays just fine regardless of whether I paste it as a
Worksheet object, Formatted text, or HTML. I save and close the Word
document, and when I reopen it, I am prompted with the question of do I
want to update links? I click yes, and when I look over the document, I
notice that two things have happen that I can't figure out how to
solve:

(1) The updated data now displays columns that are not displayed on the
Excel workbook (they are "hidden" using the Group feature in Excel).
The columns are not displayed in the Excel workbook, and weren't
displayed in the Word document during the initial linking, so why do
they show up now?

(2) In two cases, the linked data is not updated, but merely "pushed
down" and a new link is inserted. This doesn't happen for every link,
only two of the six. The links all come from the same Excel workbook,
same sheet, and are all being linked into the Word document in the same
way, so I'm not sure why some links update properly and some do this
funky new link thing.

Is there something I need to do in Excel before linking that will
prevent these errors, er, features from occuring? Any help would be
greatly appreciated!
