How do I keep all my links as "Manual Update?"

I go to Edit>Links and select the links listed as Auto, then click on Manual
update button, the OK. But when I reopen Links, they are the same as before.

Are certain file types unable to be changed from Auto to Manual update?

I have not come across any file types that cannot be changed.
HAve you tried this, after changing the update assignment, do an edit in the
document, say add a space, then save, remove the space, save. Then see if
that helps stick the update changes. Sometime Word needs to know that
something has really changed, an edit, to make certain other settings stick.
