links do not work

Using Word 2003. I want to place links in a table as a
shortcut to documents. I've followed all the HELP
instructions. It just does not work. Any suggestions will
be greatly appreciated.

I think I posted this in the wrong place previously -
under customization of tool bars, etc. Sorry.

Can you be a bit more specific when you say you've "followed all the HELP
instructions"? What specifically have you tried and/or done? You should be
able to type the text you want to act as a link and go to Insert>Hyperlink.
You'll want to make sure it says Link to an existing file or webpage and then
click the browse for file button and select the file.
