ListNum Reference

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I'm rewriting a reference manual with hundreds of images with captions, and I want to convert the caption numbering to a ListNum approach. I'm wondering if anyone can point me to a good, concise reference on ListNum, how it works, and how to use it? There's nothing in the Help menus, and I'm not finding exactly what I'm looking for. I've seen a lot of recommendations for using ListNum, but I'm looking for a good reference or tutorials on it. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

In short, my existing captions are set up like this: "Figure 2-4 [where 2 is the chapter]: The annotation tools". In this revision, I want to go through all the captions and, using ListNum, set them up in such a way that the numbers will automatically adjust as images and their captions are moved around, deleted and so on. Anyway, interested in a good ref.

Try this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/162895

And this:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051895471033.aspx

Three things they don't tell you:

1) The "level" controls the format of the number.

2) To change the level, place the cursor on the ListNum field and "Tab"

3) It "appears" that you can change the NAME of the list. You can't: there
are three predefined names, and you have to use one of them.

(There's a laborious work-around, but you won't need it.)

The code you are looking for is:
{ STYLEREF 1 \s }-{ LISTNUM "NumberDefault" \l 7 }

Hope this helps

Thanks, John. I'm wondering if ListNum is going to work for the figure identifications that are a part of my captions. Here's the situation: Each chapter of the book is its own section, and each chapter contains images -- some of them many. Most of these images have captions, e.g., "Figure 2-13: The annotation tools". In this case, 2 would be the chapter number, and 13 the number of the caption in the chapter, as I'm sure you surmised.

I'm trying to determine if ListNum can be used for the figure numbers of the captions, so that if I add or delete one, or change its position within the chapter, the various figure numbers for captions within the chapter will automatically change.

One concern or question I have, after going through the references you shared, is if I use NumberDefault, will I be able to do it in such a way that the first figure number in Chapter 2, for instance, would be 2-1, and the first figure number in Chapter 3 would be 3-1, rather than just carrying on with the numbering sequence from the previous chapter?

Yeah, it works fine: I use that all the time.

But you have to READ what I sent you, I am not going to type it all out for
you :)

(You're missing the "\s" switch...) :)

Hope this helps
