A little bit of detail might help. Like what happens when you try?

I get a message saying that my software is not supported. It happens with all my XP specific software.

Would you like to post the error message in full, and have you a trial
version of Office 2007 on the computer?

The error messages are as follows:
Office XP for Small Business
Systeme d'exploitation incorrecte, ou version du syteme d'exploitation
incompatible avec l'application
Followed by
Another setup is running

Pinnacle Express
SetFilter0 error: OS Version not set!
Followed by
This installation does not support your operating system

I've just tried these 2 again to check the messages. My version of Vista is
in French, but that isn't usually a problem. I bought my last laptop in
France too. It was stolen and I had no option but to go with Vista.

No, the message means Vista as systeme d'exploitation. I had it running in
this configuration on XP with no problems. You can't buy an english op system
on a french computer, but this is the third one I've had (much cheaper in
france) and there's never been a problem with this before. The english
software that I still have for earlier versions of Windows loads fine (even
one for Win 95). It just seems to be XP vs Vista which is very annoying. (I
can't afford to buy another version and the upgrade price is huge - too much
for my pocket).

IIRC, Office XP SBE was an OEM only edition that came with a new computer and dies with the computer. It cannot be installed on another computer.

After furious head scratching, Charlotte asked:

Thanks for the news - what a b*mmer! My computer was stolen and I didn't even
get the full value in insurance - Open Office here I come.
