Local project to published

Right now we have 5 project managers trying out the trial version of Project
2003. In the next few weeks they will be upgrading to Project 2003
Professional w/ 2003 Server. Can they create projects locally for now and
upload them to the server once we finalize the upgrades? Will I run into
problems trying to do this?

Thanks.

Not sure what you mean about the resource pool. I will need to create
Enterprise Resources that match what the project managers are using in their
local projects before importing? Thanks for your help.

Yes, they can. After the upgrade, they should IMPORT their projects to Project Server.

Just make sure that the resource pool is complete before importing the
projects; this will minimize the possible trouble you could meet.

In Project Server 2003, you must define the resources in your organization
in the Enterprise Resource Pool. Project managers will use then these
enterprise resources to staff their projects. In preparation for your move
to the enterprise environment, you will need to enter resources in the
Enterprise Resource Pool that match the resources used in the current
projects, along with any resources that you anticipate will be used in
future projects.

When you make the official move to the enterprise environment, you should
import each project into the system using Tools - Enterprise Options -
Import Project to Enterprise. You SHOULD NOT use the File - Open - and
File - Save As method to save these projects in the Project Server database.
When you use the Import Project wizard, pay special attention to the page
that deals with resources, and make sure you match every resource in the
project with an enterprise resource found in the Enterprise Resource Pool.
Hope this helps.

We add all resources from our Outlook Exchange address book which is shared
across all users so luckily we will not have to worry about naming
conventions. Thanks to everyone for your replies.

When you use the Project Import function, the Wizard automatically maps
resources to the Enterprise Resource pool. If the resource maps accurately,
it will import using the Entterprise resource name. If it does not map, the
Wizard will offer alternatives for you to pick (keep as local resource,
change to selected Enterprise Resource or add the resource to the Enterprise
resource pool.
If you make sure your resources are all in the Enterprise pool, it wil
speed up the import and reduce your effort. It will also minimize the risk
of adding duplicate resources becuase of different naming conventions.
