Locked Access database

We had an Access database that several of us in the office
were sharing, however, the database has recently
become 'locked' and we don't know how it happened or how
to unlock it. The Access Icon now shows up in our
directory with a little picture of a 'key lock' next to it
and right now it will only let one user in at a time.
When anyone else tries to access the database it indicates
it is locked by the original user. Does anyone know how
this happened and how to fix it?
