"Locked for edit"

M

Mike

I cannot edit any documents in office, including Outlook,
and I have no idea why. Although I haven't tried, I
believe wordpad acts the same way.

The error message I recieve when I try to type in text
reads "This command is not available because the document
is locked for edit"

I haven't changed, modified, or installed anything
recently to make me suspect that I screwed something up.
Any help is appreciated.

Have you activated your copy of Office? Check under the Help menu. If there
is a command there about "Activate" try it. If you have a version that
doesn't require activation there won't be such a command. If you have
already activated, it will tell you that. You may have to do this for each
application. If it is happening in WordPad you may even need to activate
Windows, although it would surprise me that you could do anything if Windows
was not activated.

come out of word, search your drive for normal.dot and
rename to normal.old, start word ( the normal.dot is
recreated) if this does not work copy normal.dot from
another machine or your install CD's.
run a repair - start settings control panel - add/remove
programs, select office, the word module and select repair
if this does not work run a chkdsk with fix tick.
sounds like the base template has got corrupt or another
has been left open as part of a corruption,
you could try
