Locked for editing messages

Seems to happen when I'm fiddling with cut and paste or
draw objects.
How do I avoid and how can I get out of it without having
to restart. Will appreciate your help!

What version of Word are you using?

Do the messages appear on the screen in a message box or on the status
bar? What do the messages say exactly?
