Is there a safe key to open an Access 2000 DB without running code in the
start up form?

Try holding down the Shift key while opening the database.

Hold down the Shift key while you open the file (not a shortcut). This will
bypass the startup options unless you have disabled this feature.

Securing a database is a project all on it's own, but these links will aid in

you may also want to take a look at converting your app to an .mde (or
..accde for 2007).

Remember, though, that disabling the bypass key disables it for everyone:
