locking elements in word 2002

I'm trying to create a document template for a letterhead that will prevent
users from editing the common elements. (Return address, company logo, etc.)
This appears to be easy in Word 2003...but is there some way to lock down
portions of a document/template to prevent editing in Word XP/2002?

Not completely, but you can put them in a header/footer and have fair
control. Basic rule, though, is that anything that can be read can be copied
and edited.

See http://word.mvps.org/faqs/customization/ProtectWord2000PlusHeader.htm.

Otherwise, look into protected or "online" forms. Check this in help. For
more about online forms, follow the links at
http://addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Forms or
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Customization/FillinTheBlanks.htm especially Dian
Chapman's series of articles.

Hope this helps,
