Lockups with Outlook XP

I have no idea why, but Outlook XP loves to lock up. It does it on all our
workstations and it does it often. The typical occurence is: A user calls
me over because his or her Outlook is not responding. I go into the task
manager and end the Outlook application. I then try to restart the Outlook
application and it hangs on startup. I notice that the hard drive is
grinding away, but Outlook is just displaying the splash screen. I have the
feeling that Outlook is performing a scandisk type of scan on the pst file.
I have noticed that the users with the larger pst files take longer to
recover from this state. Is there anyway I can avoid telling the end user
to wait it out? What exactly is it doing? Can this be disabled?
