Login failed with Project Pro 2007

Chris King

Setup: Project Server 2007 SP1, Project Professional 2007, PWA, etc...

Problem: When a user with the appropriate rights (including me, and I have
full admin rights) attempts to login to Project Pro 2007 and connect to the
Project server we receive the error "Login Failed. Project could not connect
to server Please check your username and password."

Now here is the weird part. If we open up PWA (which connects fine with the
same Username and Password), and we leave PWA running in the Background, when
we attempt to connect Project Pro to the server it works just fine.

My question: Is this just a bug of 2007 or is there a setting that I need
to change to make this work? We have the access data sources across domains
check and all of the other settings, and logining into PWA works just fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Chris,

Is your project server hosted outside of your organization network? It
seems to be your machine windows ID is different from Project Server
Windows ID? If so,it may be required to enter user name and password
(Project Server windows authentication details) when you log in.
Anyhow, you can try the following steps, I hope this will work.

******************************************************
Step 1: Turn on Manual Detection:

Launch MS Project Professional

Tools -> Enterprise Options -> Microsoft Office Project Server
Accounts

Choose "Manually control connection state"

Click OK

File -> Exit to close the MS Project Professional

**********************************************************

Step 2: Connect to MS Project Server

Lauch MS Project Professional

Choose the required profile name from Profile Dropdown

Check the box called "Enter User Credentials"

Enter User Name and Password

Click OK

MS Project Professional will connect to MS Project Server

************************************************************************************************************
Note: You need to enter user name and password on every time you
connect to MS Project Server. If you want seemless connection, you
have to define your access info in Manage Passwords option under
Control Panel-> User Accounts. If you do this, you no need to enter
username and password on every connection.

I hope this helps. Please let me know, if you have any questions.

Thanks

Chak,
Thanks for the reply. Our system is hosted outside the company network,
but the windows username and password are the same. Also I do use manual
control for the connection state, and it does the same thing no matter if I
try to type in the user credentials or automatically sign in.

Any other thoughts on this. It just seems weird that PWA must be open for
this to work. I have no toruble connecting as long as PWA is open first. It
only happens when you have everything else closed and try to just open
Project Pro itself.

Chris,

You said, windows ID is the same for machine and project server. But
that doesn't address the issue. Both user names are from different
domains. so, when you enter project server username enter with domain.
Example: PJServerdomain\chris

I hope that will solve the issue.

Thanks
Chak
