long delays loading Word

Suddenly it takes at least three minutes for Microsoft
Word to load after I click on the word icon from the
taskbar, or on a specific doc. from my documents. I also
notice on the status bar (above taskbar) it
says "requesting virus scan" for every document. Is this
standard? Any suggestions? Thanks, TOB

It seems that there a LARGE number of people that have been affected
by Nortons latest update. I hope Microsoft has the GUTS to post in
large letters, a note about this on the front page of their web site,
and to direct everyone to the appropriate Norton phone number/e-mail
address where they can register a complaint and help to insure that
Symantec will imediatly own up to the error in LARGE print on the
front of their home page, and will provide an imediate option to
remove the offending update, and give a promise that fixing the
defective update is now a #1 PRIORITY and post a time when we should
be able to get that update. I have had at least 10 customers call me
today complaning about this problem. I wonder if MacAfee would like to
post something on their home page that would in effect give Norton a
hard time for putting out a major bug like this and at the same time
recommending their product as PERMANENT solution to these kind of
problems. This might help light a fire under Symantecs tail end to fix
the problem.

Mind you, these are just my suggestions and opinions....I could be
wrong....

Hi Tob -

I have been having this same problem for 18 hours. With
Excel also. After much effort I finally called Microsoft
and paid my $35 - but they gave me a fix which works
perfectly. I am assuming you have XP.

1. Search for officeav.dll
2. In my case I found it within Norton Antivirus.
Change the name to officeav.old
3. Search > Run > %appdata%
4. If you find icons named Normal (I found two of them),
delete them
5. Start > Run > winword.exe /safe (note the space
afte exe)
6. This will open Word in Safe Mode. In my case it
reconfigured all the Office programs and I had to put in
the Office XP Professional disk.

After the reconfiguration, everything worked perfectly.

Let me know of it works for you. I am at
[email protected].

Same problem here. It started last night on my lap top and today on my pc at work. I'm using Word 2002. Spent two hours trying to research this on the Microsoft site and found nothing. Thank goodness I found your post. I'm not alone!

Okay, for those of you lost, open NAV and disabling Office Plug in worked for me also. I had to close Word before it worked however. Here are the directions:

Open Norton software (I have 2003 version but mine actually expired and this is still a problem), click on Options, click Other-Miscellaneous. A new window opens, one of the option says: How to keep Microsoft Office documents protected, disable Office Plug-ins.

Good luck.

Well it isn't a Microsoft problem. Norton have let their Verisign
Certificate expire on 7 Jan. Disabling the Office Plug-in for NAV is the
best solution.
