long saves and rather unstable

Hi all,

I was asked recently to edit a word 2002 document. It is
about 40 pages long and has some pictures as well as some
tables. It turnes out that it takes quit long when saving
the document (1 minute and more), and, it is rather
unstable (one day it stopped responding every 10 minutes).
I'm very surprised with this behaviour, considered the
computer I'm running word on. It is an IBM ThinkPad
portable with a 2 GHZ processor and 512 MB of RAM (new
since november). I have turned off allmost every option,
but it doesn't improve the performance, but I have noticed
that my virus scanner possible plays a role in the whole
thing. I have a Norton Antivirus 2004 scanner who
apparently scans the document all the time. Is there
someone who also has this scanner and doesn't have any
problems. I'm really annoyed with this problem and hope
that it can be solved in the near future.

So, any remarks are welcome....

Thanks in advance

Open NAV and disable the Office Plug-in under Advanced Options.

Yes, I had Norton 2003 Professional, it specifically has a built in scanner
for Office 2000 and later version files. I would suggest disabling this
feature from the Norton 2004 options, it should improve the speed both on
opening and saving Office files.

Check to make sure "versions" are turned OFF. This can bloat a
file beyond belief.

Then SAVE AS RTF then reopen in Word. that can strip out a lot
of the crap thet builds up in Word Documents.

Perhaps there is a macro in the document. Open the TOOLS/MACRO
menu and set the dialog box to see all the macros in the document
itself. Delete them.
