long wait when switching between documents

My work often causes me to switch back and forth between more than one open document. When doing so, often the cursor turns into the hourglass and requires me to wait, sometimes up to about 15 seconds, before I can work in the document to which I have just switched. The problem gets better and worse over time, and I can't figure out what is causing the variation, either. Thanks.

This might be a cause of have multiple instances of different programs open
and running. Try closing any windows you might find unnecessary and not
needed.

I started to have the same problem recently. It is very
annoying and closig other programs does not help. I have
been looking for the solution for a while with no luck.
Would appreciate any help/suggestion
Thanks

I agree. Closing programs has not worked for me, either. The only "multiple intance" of programs I often have open is, ironically, mulitple Word documents. This is such an important aspect of my work that it's making me considering tossing the entire system, which is a pathetic course of action to get software to work as it should. Argh!!

Thanks, but that does not seem to affect it. I did look at the Windows Task Manager, and oddly it shows that when I switch documents, my CPU usage jumps all the way up to 100%, regardless of the size of the documents. I have tried this while disconnected completely from the network and with Nortion Anti-Virus turned off (and disabled at star-up), and I still get the same results. Any other thoughts?

I even tried to remove the Word comletely and then reinstall it - to no avail! There is something mentioned in the MS Knowledge Base about corrupt fonts and network printer drivers that Word is trying to access. It is not clear how to detect if any of those is the case.

I tired that too, also to no avail. Alas, since my desktop is 2 1/3 years old, I think I'm just going to can it and start over. What a waste of money, just to cure a software glitch. Yuck.
