Long waits on Open or SaveAs

Using any Microsoft Office 2003 component, when I try to change a
directory in an Open or Save As dialog, I get a long delay of about 30
seconds. This occurs whenever I try to open the "look in" dropdown at
the top of the Open and Save As dialogs.

It feels like a network timeout. After considerable experimentation, I
determined that the delay was related to "net use" statements that
pointed to systems that were not turned on at the time. I am able to
restore file open/save as performance by deleting all "net use"
statements for inactive systems.

The problem is that I really don't want to do that. I want to keep the
"net use" definitions permanently present, whether the other systems
are active at every moment or not.

Is there any solution to this problem? I know this problem did not
occur with older versions of Office, or maybe it was some other
variable.

Thanks.

Yes, I have a lot of "net use" statements in effect, which is the
command-line method for mapping drives. I have to delete them to
regain performance.

The default save folder is on the E: drive, a local drive that is not
mapped. I could certainly understand a network timeout of the default
save folder were a mapped drive and the drive wasn't active. But that
is not what is happening here.

Well, I finally found a reference to this in the MS knowledgebase at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;313937.
Unfortunately, the only solution Microsoft has is to disconnect all
inactive network shares. That's a major pain for the way I use my
network.

Is there really no other solution?

(I wonder if Open Office has this problem? I'll bet only Microsoft
could do something this dumb.)
