Look up Barcode Information

Jan Il

Hi all :) Access 2003 - Windows XP

I would like to know if someone might know of any websites, or programs,
that will provide specific product information for scanned barcodes. The
information can then be entered into the Access tables with the barcode
numbrer.

I would truly appreciate any input.

Not sure if I understand your question ...
Barcodes are nothing more than strange looking fonts.
A scanner will recognize the font characters.
If using a keyboard wedge between the scanner and the machine .. each
barcode character will be converted a keystoke and entered into the control
that has the current focus when the scanner is triggered as if they were
typed in on the keyboard ...

Thank you for the help. My client said he was told there were a few
websites that you could scan barcodes into and they would give you the
product information, such as mfg. , description, perhaps even unit price,
which could then be entered or copied into the Access tables. I looked for
hours through tons of websites, putting in every search criteria I could
think of, and could not find anything of the sort. So, thought maybe
someone here who plays with barcodes might know of one, or at least where
they could buy by such a list. They have maybe a couple hundred items in
inventory, but, they don't want to have to manually enter all the data.
Another "I just want to click this one button and"....a 'one click does it
all'....<sigh>

If he wasn't such a nice guy.... I easily could really dislike him
yesterday. ..and the day before. ;o))

Hi, Jan -

I think what you are looking for is a website where you can lookup a UPC
code which has been scanned as a barcode. I didn't know there were such
sites, but a quick Google for "lookup UPC" turned up a bunch, including
this one:

http://www.upcdatabase.com/

You may also want to look at the rest of the Google results, though.

Well......I did find this one, but, when I scanned the UPC code into the
window, it didn't return anything. It is a standard UPC code, and I tried
several others that are standard PC products. Same thing, nothing. I would
guess that their db is very limited. But, I'll check out some of the others
to see if there are any that will work. I realize there are only a
gazillion UPC codes in use in the world, but, you'd think they'd know which
ones *I* want,))

Thank you.very much for the information, and your time to help. I really
appreciate it. :)

Hi Jan,

Have you had a look at Russ Adams site:

http://www.adams1.com/pub/russadam/share.html

A few years ago, I wrote a membership database that used a scanned barcode
on the member's cards for role call and dues info. It took a bit of fiddling
with the barcode scanner and the barcodes to get it working. Generally, the
scanner comes with software and sample barcodes. We had to keep adjusting
the scanner until it read the sample we were using (Code 39) and then adjust
the Access printout until the scanner started reading it. After the initial
setup, everything worked smoothly and continues to do so.

Hi Jan!

Not much to add here, but certain barcodes use a check digit(s) as well as
the numbers; for example, the common Code 39 font uses an asterisk before
and after the string of numbers. Perhaps that might have been an issue. I
didn't try any, though..

Cheers!

Doh! Vacation is making me dopey! You said you scanned in the UPC, so my
comment about check digits wouldn't apply... Please disregard!

Glad to have you back! Hope you and the family had a great time.

Thank you for the additional input, it very well may be handy. We have run
into a couple of barcodes the scanner just won't read. It may be they're
not of the general composition. I have suggested the wedge, but, the client
wants a walk-about so he 'just walk around and scan everything in. He wants
to be able to have the barcode scanned into the database and the relative
product information will be added as well. I don't think that is possible,
but, I am not familiar with what is out there for barcodes and what may be
possible. So, I was looking to see if there were any programs with such
information, or perhaps he will have to get some kind of software from the
mfg's that will do that. I have my doubts on that as well. But, it don't
hurt to ask. <g>
