Looking for some help

Let say that I am not a power user to any extent. I am a photographe
that started to catalog my dvd's of images in an attempt to be able t
find a decent way of finding that particular image number in a
efficient way. If I am posting this in the wrong forum, my apologies.

Here's what I do, I have a starting file number in colum A and endin
number in column B. I have other information in other columns such a
the camera type used and keywords for what types of images are on th
dvd.

What I was hoping to do was to be able to find a way to find which CD
particular image number may reside on. Say I am looking for imag
number 28756 and I have a range of 28645 to 28789. Is there a featur
that would allow me to do this or I am just hopefully dreaming tha
this would be easy. I can easily search on camera type or keywords an
get the results I want, it is just this file number that is getting me.

I have over 200 DVD's of digital images and growing quickly

If your table were in, say, A3:G500, with starting numbers in col A,
ending numbers in col B with no overlaps in the ranges (so no duplicate
numbers), CD identifiers in col C, and the image number sought in a
cell named IMGNUM, you could try

=LOOKUP(2,1/(A3:A500<=IMGNUM)/(B3:B500>=IMGNUM),C3:C500)

The easiest way is the VLOOKUP function. Let's say the image number you
are looking for is in cell G1. Then in cell H1 enter the formula
=VLOOKUP(G1,$A:$C,3)
Here I assumed the DVD identifier is in column C. If not, but rather in
column F then you'd change the $C to $F and the 3 to 6 (F is the sixth
column).

Your data must be in ascending order for this to work. This will
probably be the case since you're most likely adding information to the
end of the worksheet.
