Loose mouse pointer when drawing shapes in XP

When I click on a draw shape button (with or without the drawing canvas set)
I loose the mouse pointer. If I click and drag over the document to create a
shape it does then appear but I am not sure where it will appear. Is there a
setting somewhere for this?

Probably, you need to update your graphics card driver. You should be able to
download the newest one from the manufacturer's website.
