Losing format on opening documents in Word 2000

I have a copy of Word 2000 running in Windows 98. Recently, every time I try to open a document, it opens in ascii format (not sure what the technical term is: I can see the text, but all formatting is gone. The end of the document shows all hte options/fonts/ etc. in a few paragraphs). Then I close the document, and reopen it, and usually then it's fine. Sometimes it's failing to save accurately as well. The problem seemed to start around the time I moved everything over to a new hard drive or around the time I installed Norton Antivirus, but I don't know for sure. I completely uninstalled Word and then reinstalled it, and it still does the same thing. Any help anyone? Thanks in advance!

In the File Open dialog, change the "Files of type" setting from "Recover
Text from Any File" to "All Word Documents."
