I find using the Format Object/Picture tool on the Picture toolbar to work
the best. It allows me to specify a location without having to eyeball it.
First in the original document, open the Format Picture dialog. Copy down as
much information as you can about the layout of the object. You may have to
select the Advanced button to get more information. (In time you'll learn
what values impact what characteristics that you're wanting to maintain.)
Paste the object in the destination document.
Now open the Format Picture dialog for this pasted object. You may find that
the values in the Layout tab or Advanced dialog box are not the same as the
original. Re-enter the original values and select OK.
Getting an object to land on the page where you want it is an iterative
process. In other words it takes trial and error. Change a parameter and see
what happens. Then change a different and see how that affects it. Sometimes
this can be frustrating because Word may not do what you thought it would.
Keep practicing and before long you'll be an expert.
I like the Format Picture for resizing objects in my documents as well. I
can define all the pictures in the document to be exactly 9 pica (1.5
inches). Then there is no guessing with the resize tools, aspect ratio is
maintained, and all of the pictures look consistent throughout even a large
document (20 pages).
