Loss or non-opening old Word97 files with installation of Word02

I got a new laptop for Christmas. Transfered my Works spreadsheets and extensive Word97 writing files from the old laptop. Then bought Works Suite 2004 and installed Works 7.0 which reads the older spreadsheets just fine. Also installed Word 2002 and now when I double-click on an older Word97 file, Word02 opens but an error message box then says, "The file (Name) is not available." Then when I close Word02, an error message box says "The file Normal already exists. Do you want to replace the existing file?" Help please if anybody can.

If you are using Word freestanding (not starting it from the Works Task
Launcher), you will want to uninstall the Microsoft Works Suite Add-in for
Word (through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs), which is most likely the
cause of the message about Normal.dot already existing (and a lot of other
problems that you would eventually run into). Also, if you have Norton
AntiVirus installed, disable the Norton Office Plug-in, which may be the
cause of the other message.

Thank you Suzanne for jumping in there and your help. I may be sunk. After I left the message, I tried to reload Word02 from the disk in the reinstall/repair mode. It came back just fine, along with the problems

After seeing your reply tonight, I went into Add/Remove Programs and took out the Works Suite Add-in for Word. (that was easy) Then I restarted the computer to make sure the changes took affect. All my problems showed up again upon restart

I have Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition installed (This is Norton, right?) but don't see anywhere I can disable the Norton Office Plup-in

Should I do major surgery, removing programs? Symantec, Works, Word, and reload one at a time

Thank you for your time. Bruce

Here are the instructions for dealing with Norton CE (courtesy of Office MVP
Beth Melton):

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:
