lost all information in outlook 2002

Hi All,
I recently had a problem when booting up xp. Outlook opened automaticaly on
boot up but had no information. No folders, contacts nothing even the rules
were gone. I looked in the outlook folder and the .pst files were there.but
could not get them back in.
Fortunately I had made a backup of my .pst folder a couple of days ago and
was able to recover my losses. I only had to redo the "rules" .
What would cause this to happen?
I have not encoutered this before.
cheers peter

Hard to say what happened here without any configuration details and what
you did to recover your computer. Outlook doesn't load automatically on
startup on its own. Something else must have happened here as well.
Installed something which caused your computer startup issues? The Event
Viewer might reveal something regarding your startup issues as well.

Hi Again
Thanks for replying .
On re-reading my original mail I can see that it is not very clear and
incomplete.
So lets try again
I have it set on XP so Outlook starts up on pc boot up.
On this occasion Outlook started but in a "virgin" state.
Everything was gone all folders , e-mail accounts, contacts etc.
The .pst was in the Outlook folder, but I did not know how to re-associate
it with the programme.
So I imported a recent back up of my .pst files from my backup hdd, but had
to re-setup my e-mail accounts and rules.
On my wifes profile on the same PC there was no problem, Outlook was fine.
Thanks again for replying... peter

If you want Outlook to start automatically, you shouldn't configure Outlook
to start on boot but you should configure it on logon or place a shortcut in
the Startup folder. If you configure it to run on boot, there is no user
profile loaded yet and thus no settings either.
