Lost all my inbox messages --- is this a virus?

I received a "Welcome to Outlook Express" email today. It was the sole
message. EVERY OTHER message in my inbox had been deleted, read & unread.
Many were important. How can I get them back?

I won't even ask why in the world I would get such a message, since I've
been using OE for YEARS. Is this a virus?
