A small child turns to Ed, and exclaims: "Look! Look! A post from Dan
I am sorry to have troubled you, I expected an actual MS
online agent to respond on a Microsoft website, not
volunteers, my mistake, I am sorry...
This is a Microsoft "Online Community" (or "newsgroup") - some are monitored
by MS personnel, most aren't (in my experience). This is spelled out in the
FAQ (or was, last time I checked)
Your response to me
was to state facts that I already knew, or were not
relevant.
a) If she hadn't stated the things and you didn't know them, then you
wouldn't now.
b) This is a newsgroup. People say things that are irrelevant (and
sometimes things that downright don't make sense)
-or- ask
for more details if you do not understand a post.
It's not a case of not understanding, it's a case of misunderstanding.
Say, for example, you walk into a Swahili restaurant, and the waiter starts
speaking Swahili to you. In the most part, you wouldn't understand a word
they were saying, and it wouldn't sound recognisable, and you would ask for
clarification as you didn't understand.
If, however, there was a particular Swahili phrase that translated as "Can I
take your order, sir?", and it sounded phonetically identical to the English
phrase "Your mother is a stupid prostitute", and they said that to you, then
you would get rather annoyed, and posisbly shout, smack them across the face
with a wooden plank, or walk out of the restaurant. You wouldn't think that
you had not understood, even though you misunderstood.
I am well aware of the terms of the EULA, well aware of
virus protection (I also use AVG... from Grisoft). and I
do not have a virus problem, AVG is pretty good...
Do you update your virus definitions regularly (Every day? Every couple of
days? Every couple of weeks?)
Also, you might want to run an Adware scanner such as the free version of
Ad-Aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com - this detects "spyware" and "adware" that
is installed on your machine when you visit some websites or install some
software, which can slow down your machine, display ads on your machine, or
(sometimes) spy on your machine and what you do with it.
but I
still like to reformat...
That's your choice and you're free to take it.
I have been using computers
since the osborne, built several, and was installing 128k
memory upgrades and floppy drives in PC Jrs back in 1985.
That's nice. So you've been working with computers since before I was born
I couldnt wait to get my hands on the PC-XP when it came
out.
What is the "PC-XP"? Do you mean Microsoft's Windows XP operating system?
Or is this some antique machine I've never heard of?
I remember using dos 2.1 before viruses... so being
told "to use a virus detector and keep it updated!!!" was
a little insulting..
a) JoAnn didn't know this
b) If you have been running since before viruses existed, then you might not
have realised the importance of a good virus scanner.
I am not a novice, which is probably
why I lost the reg key anyway, (its in a box somewhere)
JoAnn didn't know you were not a novice. Many of the users who post here
are novices, and many novice users don't even know that it is illegal to
install Publisher on more than 2 PCs (one desktop and one notebook, which
are not in concurrent use).
Treating a user as a novice until you have evidence to the contrary does
little harm, and more good (it often avoids a lot of confusion)
I
have owned windows 2.0,3.1,95,98,98r2,2000,ME,xp, and
thats just operating software...
That's nice. I wasn't around for 2.0, I skipped 2000 and never got ME
because it was so awful.
Only 3? I have used 5, and have had 4 installed (Office 97, 2000, XP and
2003)
several upgrades of each software AND ALL original CDs
But do you keep them in their original cases? If not, then do you read the
back of the case when you remove them to store them elsewhere?
I do wish it was easier to keep track of all the license
#s...
Yes, but in this age where most everyone wants something for nothing,
manufacturers have to be more and more able to prevent unauthorised
installations of their software.
I thank everyone for their suggestions, including
Johns article which I will go read...
Good luck and I hope you sort out your problem
